The show starts with the sounding of the putatara (conch) announcing the arrival of you as a visitor to the house of Maui – the art of Maori haka.
Following the sounding of the conch is the traditional karanga (call of welcome), the Whaikorero (welcoming speech) of the chief and then the waiata tawhito (traditional song of relish). Following the song of relish, the real entertainment begins
The main performance starts with a warm welcome from the narrator who has been given the name of ‘Guide Rangi’. She will explain the different aspects that the audience will see throughout the performance and will formally explain the different dances throughout the show.
At the completion of the show, the performers will stay behind with Guide Rangi for around 10 – 15 minutes to allow for visitors to meet the performers, take pictures and ask any questions that audience members might have as well.
Every item has a story to tell and these stories are told through song and dance. The a few of the performance items are explained as follows
- Whakaeke: traditional entrance onto the stage, the story of this entry is about qualities of good leadership and the importance of making good decisions. This item combines, song, the use of the Koikoi (type of Maori weapon), the poi, haka taparahi (haka with actions) and action song.
- Waiata a ringa: traditional action songs feature throughout the show and the first action song is a famous New Zealand action song called Toia mai which welcomes everyone from near and afar to Aotearoa New Zealand and to the house of Maui – the art of Maori haka
